Exploring the Why: The Creation of The Adventures of Watson & Sherlock

As an interdisciplinary scientist with expertise in sleep medicine, neuroscience, a deep curiosity of the human condition, and a mom, one of the things I’ve always found fascinating is how little we teach kids about their own bodies at an early age. Think about it—our introduction to anatomy and physiology often happens much later in life, and it’s almost always fragmented. We learn about the heart in one lesson, the brain in another, muscles in yet another, but rarely are we encouraged to think about how these systems are all interconnected.

That realization sparked the idea behind The Adventures of Watson & Sherlock. This book series isn’t just about presenting kids with fun stories; it’s about introducing them to the amazing whys and hows of their bodies. I want children to understand not only the individual pieces of the puzzle but how all the pieces fit together to create the incredible systems that keep us alive, thriving, and growing.

When I started brainstorming this project, I imagined the way these concepts are usually taught—disjointed and isolated. By the time students encounter anatomy and physiology in school, they’re often overwhelmed by how much there is to learn. What if we could change that? What if children could begin building a foundational understanding of their bodies at an early age, one that would allow them to connect the dots later on?

That’s the goal of Watson & Sherlock. The books provide factual, anatomically correct(-ish!) information paired with whimsical illustrations designed to spark curiosity and wonder. For instance, in The Mystery of Sleep, we explore what happens in the brain and body while we sleep. In The Case of the Racing Heart, we take a deep dive into how the brain, heart, and muscles work together.

By presenting these concepts holistically and in a way that’s approachable for kids, I hope to plant seeds of curiosity. My dream is for children who read these books to enter future lessons on science or health with a solid understanding of their own bodies and how they work. More importantly, I want them to feel empowered to take care of themselves and make informed decisions about their health as they grow.

This project is deeply personal to me. Not only does it allow me to combine my love of neuroscience with my passion for education, but it’s also rooted in real-life questions from my son, Watson, whose curiosity inspires me every day. Seeing his excitement and wonder as he learns about the world around him reminds me how important it is to foster that curiosity in all children.

Through this series, I hope to create a bridge—one that connects fun, engaging storytelling with science-based learning, and one that helps kids see the bigger picture of how our bodies work. After all, our bodies are amazing, and understanding them is one of the best gifts we can give to the next generation.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, teacher, or just someone who loves empowering young minds, The Adventures of Watson & Sherlock is for you. Let’s raise a generation that’s curious, informed, and excited about the wonder of their own bodies.
